Vintage Congo Bars Recipe

Congo Bars are a nostalgic treat known for their gooey and soft texture packed with rich chocolate and nutty goodness. This traditional recipe will take you back in time.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 cups light brown sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

Instructions:

Preheat your oven to 350F 175C

Grease and line a 9x13-inch baking pan with parchment paper

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt

In a large mixing bowl, combine the melted butter and brown sugar

Mix until well combined and slightly cooled

Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition

Stir in the vanilla extract

Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined

Fold in the chocolate chips and chopped nuts until evenly distributed in the batter

Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan, spreading it evenly

Bake in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs

Be careful not to overbake; you want the bars to be gooey and soft

Once baked, remove from the oven and allow the Congo bars to cool completely in the pan on a wire rack

Once cooled, carefully lift the bars out of the pan using the parchment paper and place them on a cutting board

Cut into desired-sized bars or squares
